As the game of hockey is back following the pandemic break, the first ice hockey coaching clinic in Indonesia has been held in Tangerang. The event was led by Ronald Wijaya and Andianto Hie, both currently the senior coaches of Badax Indonesia Ice Hockey Club and training under the Indonesia National Team Development Program. Andi and Ronald compete in the country’s national league, championing of the last season which ended in October 2022. They have previously participated in various IIHF Trainings as coaches, Ronald’s being in Finland in 2017 and Korea in 2022 while Andi’s took place in Finland in 2019.
The coaching clinic aimed to equip new ice hockey coaches with knowledge that they need for their coaching career, as well as recruiting new candidates. It was attended by participants from various backgrounds, including:

The event contained both classroom and on-ice sessions, covering both psychological and technical aspects of coaching ice hockey. There are 10 parts in total:
- Opening and introduction by Ronald Wijaya & Andianto Hie

Class session talking about the psychological aspect of coaching. The participants also discussed their vision, mission, goal, values, and priority for their future coaching career.

The participants learned about the key-points to train and look for when coaching the players about a certain skill.

- Leading on- ice practice session
Participants are assigned to conduct a 105-minute practice for players. It started with announcement of the session to the participants on the end of the first day, allowing them time to prepare individually then later as a group. In the morning of the following day, the participants gathered back together to finalize the plan, then went to the ice to conduct the practice for the total 39 players. The trainers watched how the participants perform, measures their effectivity and efficiency.

- “Personality & Communication” class by Mada Shinta Dewi
Class session where the participants were taught about different personalities between individuals. They were encouraged to understand and identify their own personality according to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, then how to communicate with others with different personalities to create an effective communication.

Participants were given feedback on their performance from the morning ice-time where they conducted a practice session.

The clinic ended at 15:00 on the second day. A plan was brought up about another ice-time to be scheduled in the nearest future. The ice-time will allow the participants another chance to lead the players’ on-ice practice session, so they can improve after gaining the post-practice feedback from the instructor. (Catherine)
