THE STORY
Before blades and indoor rinks, Indonesians learned hockey on wheels. Inline hockey in the 1990s built the first clubs, rivalries, and community culture that later became the backbone of ice hockey in Indonesia. Many players, coaches, and officials started on inline skates — and their passion turned a niche pastime into a national sporting movement. The history of hockey in Indonesia is not a tale of immediate ice, but one of asphalt and wheels. Before the arrival of synthetic or frozen rinks and the sophisticated equipment associated with ice hockey, the foundation for the sport was laid by inline hockey in the 1990s. This early iteration on roller skates was the crucible where the nascent Indonesian hockey community was forged.
Inline hockey was instrumental in building the essential infrastructure for the sport: the formation of the first dedicated clubs, the development of intense local rivalries that fuelled competitive spirit, and the creation of a tight-knit community culture. These elements—the organizational structure, the competitive drive, and the passionate fellowship—ultimately became the backbone of ice hockey when it later arrived in Indonesia.
Crucially, the early players, coaches, and officials who dedicated themselves to inline hockey did not view it as a mere alternative. They were pioneers. Their initial passion and commitment to the game on wheels were so profound that they successfully transformed what was once a niche pastime—an activity known only to a few enthusiasts—into a legitimate, national sporting movement. Without the inline generation, the current landscape of ice hockey in Indonesia would simply not exist, underscoring the deep and often overlooked debt the modern sport owes to the roller rinks of the 1990s.
